It is now history that on the first Tuesday of November 2022 that Gold Trip won the Melbourne Cup and joins the list of horses that won “ the race that stops a nation”
But way back to Archer in 1861 if the truth be known , the horse actually arrived at Port Melbourne by a boat named the “City of Sydney” and Archer was stabled at the Botanical Hotel , South Yarra.
Archer returned to make it back to back Melbourne cups in 1862 winning by a margin of 8 lengths .
The mighty Carbine carried a record heavyweight of 65.7 kgs to victory in the 1890.
It was not until 1968 and 1969 that another horse would win in consecutive years and that was Rain Lover.
So many Champions have won the race like Phar Lap in 1930 , also Galilee in 1966 became Bart Cummings 2nd Cup winner and Bart went on to train a Cup winner 12 times when Viewed won 2008 Cup.
In 1993 the Dermot Weld Irish trained gelding Vintage Crop opened the flood gates for the race to become an International target .
The amazing mare Makybe Diva won the Cup three times 2003-05.
Llyod Williams has won the Cup 7 times as an owner and Bobbie Lewis and Harry White share the riding honours at 4 victories each .
To every Owner , Trainer , Jockey or Strapper the dream of winning the Melbourne Cup will always be a never ending story !!
